New Studio : Practice stages

Milestone : Cadence

My little Cadence is now almost 12 weeks old, and I can't believe it, but she has been sleeping through the night for almost a week! Both my boys were a lot more difficult, with Zeke sleeping through the night consistantly around 9 months old, and Lex at 6 months. Cadence has showed them up at 11-12 weeks old! What a great little babe! Here is our little blessing, at over 12 pounds already!

Here are my three kiddos... All with colds or the flu :( It's been a rough week and I don't think it's going to be much better over the next few days. David has had several opportunities to work late at his job, so I've spent a lot of time wiping snotty noses, and trying to survive the wonderful world of sick kids. Still, gotta love 'em! After play time in the bath tub, they decided it was time for a photoshoot with Cadence. I'll jump on most chances for 3 kids in one photo, so here it is :)

Stuck home

Since it's just that time of year again, I'm stuck inside while waiting for the colds to go away! Nana took Zeke, my oldest, overnight so Lex and Cadence played nicely inside. Lex even prompted me for a photoshoot! I couldn't resist, since he is such a challenge to photograph. He's such a ham! Here are a couple from my day inside with only 2 kiddos. Here, Cadence seemed to discover that she has a tongue.... Kept it sticking out for what seemed like forever! What a silly girl :)

I cannot believe how awesome my boys are with their new sister. For being little terrors, and always running, screaming, and pushing each other, as soon as Cadence is nearby, they both become sensitive sweethearts, and big helps for their sister. I'm always wiping snotty nose kisses off Cadence, and if I need a diaper, burp rag, or pacifier, either of the boys are very happy to stop watching a movie, or playing with a toy to serve their sister!!! What gentlemen!!! Now if I can only make that a 'full-time' gentleman, we will be all set :)

A Dog is a Boy's Best Friend

My little Lex LOVES dogs. I'm not sure how or when it clicked with him, but he finds a dog who will tolerate him, and he just hangs out with it. Tootsie is more tolerating then our Sheltie, Bella, so she had the priviledge of a companion on the last snowy day. Most often, our dogs are farm dogs and don't get the luxury of enjoying the heated house, but I felt bad for them as I saw them staring at us through the window as the snow was blowing outside. Excuse how shaggy they look, but I'd rather bathe children then dogs in this weather, so they have to wait until spring. :)

I've found out since the day we took Zeke home from the hospital, that Tootsie is a great babysitter.... best dog in the WORLD!!

And what proud brother doesn't show off his baby sister to a.... dog?

I'm hoping I'll have a future horseback riding companion! :) Or, we'll have to invest in a small saddle that can fit a dog...

Snow Day Fun!

What a beautiful snow fall we had here in Holland, Michigan! My boys wanted to try their new sleds out, so we did the 30 minutes of bundling up with snowpants, boots, gloves, hats, coats, neck warmers, etc... and headed out into the peacefully falling snow. Lex lasted about 2 minutes, before he wanted to go back in... Zeke had fun with papa for 20 minutes and learned how to sled down the hill AND take his own sled back up.

Look who's 4!

My little Zeke turned 4 on January 6. I can't believe it's gone so fast!

With this new year, there will be a 'NEW' look to our branding. As I'm trying out on Zeke's 4 year old shoot... Our style and prices will stay the same (deep breath from all our clients) :) but there will be several changes to our workflow and booking. Aronson : Family Love

The day after Christmas, we had the priviledge of photographing the Aronson Family from.....all over the USA. The whole family was together for Christmas, and so it was a great opportunity for a Family session :) We didn't know what the weather would be when they booked in September, but it was beautiful weather for the young kiddos. We had a great time joking around with the group, and being re-inspired in photography. Sometimes my 'maternity leave' just seems too long :) Enjoy some teasers!

Aaron : Miracle

Little Aaron was such a sweet little baby boy! It's so crazy to see how quick babies grow though... Our little Cadence is 3 weeks older then little Aaron and I can already see how much she is filling out! Once, this little guy fell asleep, we could do almost any of the props and poses with him. He's just so perfect! I hope his sleeping schedule helps out his mom and dad soon... those sleepless nights are a killer! :) Thanks guys! Halloween Cuties

I love my little boys!

I really am not a fan of halloween and normally am not the kind of mom to plan it out, and have costumes and actually take them out... I'm more the kind that would like them to hand out the candy and learn about the sharing aspect of giving candy AWAY.... but, I was shopping that day and found these costumes on clearance and splurged...

Hey, I can use them next year as hand-me-downs if necessary, eh? :) Well, Zeke was THRILLED to be Woody, his favorite movie character... and Lex, well, he doesn't really know what he was... but had fun playing in the leaves from house to house in Zeeland. We went to about 12 houses and called it plenty :)

Christian & Lindy : Engagement

Well, what a beautiful day and couple to get to have this engagement session shot at. Lindy and Christian came up from Chicago for their session on our one free weekend.... the downside : David had his wisedom teeth out the day before and was KNOCKED OUT on pain killers.... So, thanks to our second shooter, Elyse, the show could still go on :) It's kinda fun to see what David and I are capable of on our own. Brent & Amanda : Wedding

The 22nd of October ended up being the one beautiful day in between all the rain and wind we had here in West Michigan. The color in the leaves was beautiful, and Brent and Amanda were thrilled the weather was even half this nice for their big day. Everything ran smooth and beautifully all day long, and it was a great ceremony to witness. Their beautiful little girl joined them at the end of their ceremony as they were announced husband and wife, and she was the best behaved and calmest 10 month old I've ever met! Bob & Elyse : Engagement

Wooo hoooo!!! I've been sooooo excited for this post. This is a couple that is very special to us. First of all, this is my baby sister. Second, many of you may have seen Elyse with us, as she is our trusted second shooter at many receptions and some weddings. Bob and Elyse will be exchanging their vows in the Spring of 2012 and David and I are priviledged to be their photographers, and also part of their bridal party!!! (Yes, we are still trying to work that out)

Bob and Elyse have dated since High School, and it's soooooo cool to see her marrying her high school sweet heart. Levi : 5 Years old

Cam : Senior

This is Cameron. He is my super talented, overly confident, awesome and favorite cousin :) LOL! Cam is great! His idea for his senior photo session was visioned much different then we typically shoot, but it was so much fun for a change to just go out and be fun and goofy! We LOVED it!
Cam is an amazing actor at Zeeland East, he's great with technology, and the comic relief of all our family gatherings. It's great to have gotten to watch him grow up, from the first time I held him as a baby, to getting his first girlfriend and car :) We are sure to see great things from Cam as he picks a college and heads in the world at a run.... Derek & Ginelle : Wedding

Derek & Ginelle had a beautiful, chilly, fall wedding. The color on the trees was in it's peak, and the bride and groom were looking snazzy! :) Derek and Ginelle are from Colorado currently, even though Ginelle grew up only a block from our farmhouse! Ginelle is a distant relative to me through my Great Grandpa, and her Grandma. It was great to see some of the family that I recognized there. Ginelle's Dad had a sweet vintage car that brought the Derek and Ginelle to their reception, and I'm soooooo glad it was there, because we got one of the coolest shots with them and car.... you're sure to see it in our portfolio collection soon :) Thanks again, and Congrats to Derek & Ginelle!

Just Waiting : Cadence

So, I've had down to do a small maternity session for this little one we are expecting in 4-5 weeks, and it just keeps getting pushed off... well, I finally got it done.... I had 2 visions for the session....I wanted my little boys in it, and I wanted it to be very short. :) Well, because I had the boys in it, short was the only way it could go :) Zeke is almost 4 years old already (WOW how the time flew!!!) and Lex is 19 months old.... Here are some fun ones from our session that lasted.... oh, about 3 minutes. LOL!
David wished he could have been in some, but we couldn't really trust Zeke with the big camera... plus, he didn't want to put down the kitty to hold the camera... oh well... that's life where we are at :)

Andy & Stephanie : Engagement

Andy and Stephanie were amazing to work with for their engagement session! First of all, they came from Ohio for the one weekend that we had a small availability for their session, and second, it was that wonderful SUPER windy saturday that we had hoped to get them in! Being that the high winds would have caused the session to end poorly, we decided to reschedule. So, with a lot of hasty last minute changes on both our schedules, we decided to try for the rainy forecast of the Sunday morning following the high winds.... It didn't look promising when that time came around, and yet the sun decided to show, and the lighting was GORGEOUS! Stephanie and Andy met at Calvin College here in Grand Rapids, and it was great talking with them, because David and Andy had their jobs in common, and Stephanie works in Social work, which fascinates me in how helpful that position can be. Without further blabbering.... Enjoy Andy and Stephanie. Congrats on your engagement! We can't wait for June to see you united in marriage!!!

I've been so excited to share it, and it's about the 2nd wedding this year where I fell behind on my own decided schedule :) God has been great, in helping me keep organized during the photography wedding season, while being pregnant and watching my boys.... Zeb & Kristi : Engaged

Ok, so I'm a little sorry that I LOVED Zeb's bike... only a little sorry :) It was so cool that his bike just happened to be an awesome prop, and so happened to be there at their engagement shoot! LOL!
Well, this is Zeb and Kristi. A beautiful night, beautiful fall color and beautiful couple.... a photographers dream shoot! Zeb and Kristi have seen us at several weddings now, and we have been absolutely priviledged to get to have Kristi play the piano at most of those weddings. She plays so beautifully, and is SOOOOO modest about it, it's clear that she is acknowledging Christ as the center of her talent. We are so excited to have Kristi be the 3rd of her family to allow us to join them on their wedding day. Lovin' Country life!

Fall is gorgeous out here in the country! We LOVE it! The weather is perfect, and the colors are spectacular. Zeke had the awesome experience of being invited to ride in Farmer Lubber's Combine as he harvested the Soy Beans around our little farm. Zeke was hesitate to ride in the huge machine, but hasn't stopped talking about the ride. Lex wouldn't have much memory of it, so we kept him back to swing outside while Zeke had some farmer time :) LOVE IT!!!!

God's Power, Splender and Promise!

Many of us Michiganders watched the big storm roll in the other day, and then only minutes later, were able to witness a gorgeous full, double rainbow! I LOVE weather and all the ways God can dazzle us with his creation.... I took my boys outside in the raging wind to watch the storm front roll in and then again as soon as the rainbow started. We discussed God's promise to Noah- to never flood the whole earth again, and I had them tell me all the colors they could see and name. It was a beautiful moment... I grabbed the first camera near me, and it happened to be the fisheye lens.... so enjoy a little distortion! :)

Samuel : Miracle

Ok, so for anyone whose a photographer out there, this was a dream photoshoot.... I couldn't possibly sort out down to the number of images I like to promise my clients because this little guy was PERFECT! I always warn mom and dad's that he's gonna fuss, cry, stay awake longer then they know is possible for a 7 day old infant, and we may need a second date to reschedule.... Through the whole session, Samuel NEVER woke up... he came asleep, and left sleeping, and I could do everything I wanted with his poses, and props.... I had a tough time choosing only 5 to blog, but these stuck out as posible portfolio options, and so I had to show them off! Sam is the first son of Luke and Stephanie, (Stephanie) who I graduated from Holland Christian with. It is so cool to see all my classmates, 10 years after graduation all successful in their careers, love, and families. Enjoy the teasers of this beautiful little boy!

Ian & Jena : Wedding

The day before their wedding, a threat of rain gave us all a little anxioty. We knew we were ready for an outdoor wedding day, rain or shine, but all just really prayed for shine.... within a few minutes of the morning, we all knew those Michigan weather men were only putting a scare on us, since the morning AND the threat of rain was gone as of the morning of their wedding day. It ended up being a better fall day then anyone could have imagined! Jena and Ian were amazing all day long... their chemistry was beautiful, and David and I really loved how Ian treated Jena like a precious gem. Jena made a gorgeous bride, and I loved seeing her Florida glamour style come out in west Michigan... It's super hard to pick only 10 teasers for you, since their whole wedding day looks right out of a portfolio, but I guess that's why they are only teasers!

Can you say 'wow'....?

Ross & Lilly : Wedding

Ross & Lilly were such an easy going, down-to-earth couple! They made the day sooooo much fun! When we first met Lilly, we discovered that she is a one-of-a-kind girl. Lilly is fun, assertive, out-going, a dare-devil, and had a great goal-list for life. Her will-power to live out those goals is amazing, and her self-discipline is like that of none other. Ross is a lucky man to find a catch like Lilly! The coolest part was that Ross and Lilly met at the church they both attended since birth. They were both baptized there as babies, and both their parents were married there.... I believe one set of grandparents were married there as well! Talk about living out a tradition!
Both their attitudes were super relaxed all day on their wedding day, and we had a great time getting to know them and their bridal party. Enjoy some teasers!

Jessica : Senior

Jess was a rep for us this past year, and now it was finally her turn for her senior photo session. We got to revisit with her horse, 'Mister', and couldn't have had a more perfect night for photography! Mister was great, and gave us his 'vogue' look too ;) LOL! It was soooo much fun, and Jess is such a tom-boy, it was fun seeing the 'cowgirl glam' she could bring to spice up her favorite comfy shirts! We had the most glorious golden sunlight for the whole session..... I'm just sorry to have so many favorites of her not smiling, but can you blame me!? Look at this 'model look' she can do anytime on que. I'm sooooo jealous! A beautiful girl + a beautiful night = beautiful collection :)

Carrie and her horse Kovu had a great night for their session. It was sunny and cloudy in the same hour, and Kovu was a very good and alert horse for the camera... There couldn't have been a nicer day for an outdoor wedding in Michigan! Tom and Brooke's beautiful beach-side vintage theme wedding was PICTURE PERFECT! Tom's family has a cottage house on the gorgeous Lake Michigan. It just so happens to have the perfect amount of space for a wedding tent and a little ceremony area on a perfectly pruned yard. It was just perfect! The coolest part was : It was David and my 5th year wedding anniversary that day as well, and what better way to celebrate then to be together at a wedding remembering what we said and felt 5 years ago that day :) Thanks Tom and Brooke for the beautiful planning for a beautiful relationship to start the first day of the rest of your lives! Little Lex : 18 months

Our baby Lex is almost 18 months old already, so we thought : let's try to squeeze in a quick photoshoot.... It went AWFUL!!! Our own child is making us consider hiring a photographer to do his session. We couldn't get his attention, and ended up going home with a crying baby after about a 15 minute session. Oh well, maybe we'll try again soon. We have a few more days before he's officially 18 months :) What's Lex doing at this age? He runs, jumps on a tramp, climbs stairs.... on his feet, not crawling...., he plays with Zeke, and wrestles with daddy. He says 'Uh oh.... " and that's it. He is a good little guy, with smiles often (just not if the camera is pointed at him). He folds his hands willingly for prayer, and plays mr. shy sometimes, for no reason. Strangers are his best friends though..... he'll walk right up to unfamiliar folks and try to join in their family and conversation. He has gained a personality in about the last 3 months.... and laughs all the time. He has 16 teeth, and is a healthy, normal growing toddler. He and his brother are the pride and joy of our lives. He will be very confused when baby Cadence arrives in 12 weeks, since he's still our little baby and milks that for all that it's worth. ;) Enjoy the teasers of our little mr. independent.

Ryan & Holly : Engagement

Holly & Ryan got the craziest Michigan weather posible for their engagement session. After months of planning it, we decided to schedule a date, and stick to it unless weather was awful.... The day forecasted thunderstorms all day, but we never got any.... Until their session. As we are setting up for the first shot at Park Township Airport, it pours. We get in the airplane hanger, and it instantly stops.... 3 times, we had to run for cover from downpours, and lightning strikes very nearby. It actually was a ton of fun, even though all our lives were probably on the line! :) LOL! We LOVE shooting in the rain, but tend to find that our clients don't always feel the same way. Holly and Ryan were great though... they thought it could be cool too, so we kept going. Go figure, at a session like this, I ended up with more images then I normally would keep for an engagement session... so I guess it's worth it in the end! :) Enjoy some teasers from this awesome couple to be married next June!

Brenen is such a handsome young man... and a super talented hunter/woodsman! We were privaleged to get to see his hunting gear and bow and gun for his photo shoot. David obviously was a little more excited about that then I, but it was still cool. We showed up at the Fish & Game club on a monday night, figuring it would be a great place for photos with the hunting gear, and we find a WEDDING PARTY THERE!!!! Saddle Benders : 4-H session

This was a different type of session for us... it's been a while since we've been able to work with horses and photography together :) We had the privilege of shooting a complete 4-H session of 14 riders with their horses. Here are a few of our favorites, but we had 14 kids with horses to get 3-5 great images of in 1.5 hours. That's less then 6 minutes a rider! It was great... most horses were super thrilled to pose, and then a few, who appeared in bad moods, were annoyed at the camera and refused to look at us or put their ears forward :) LOL! It was great fun! Enjoy these few!

I'll get around to Lex's 18 month next month, but for now, here's 2 to show how much Zeke has grown! He's a very strong, physically talented young boy, with alot of attitude, but a very kind and loving heart. He's very encouraging to us and his brother, and talks from the moment he's awake to the moment he goes to sleep. Luckily for me, he still takes one nap a day... and I'm going to miss that when he decides to quit... We love him to death, and are enjoying watching him develope each day. Love ya little buddy!

So, everyone should be watching "The Patriot" tonight remind ourselves of the sacrifices made to bring about July 4, 1776. America has come a long way since those first days in the colonies, and unfortunately, most of what was fought for, has become forgotten by our selfish, demanding, and unthankful nation.

It is a beautiful country we have been given by God to care for, and in comparison to what land God gave his chosen people, the Israelites, (Canaan) WE have the land flowing with milk and honey. Please take some time today to remember and consider what YOU would do to defend this country if the time ever comes for us to stick up for her once again. Freedom came with a priceless cost. Don't take it for granted.

The Blacquiere family was a casual and fun group, all gathered on a Sunday afternoon for their photo session. After we had to reschedule from a nasty weather day, God blessed us with a good sunny, and hot day... We even got some color in the short hour of walking around the Fish and Game club and setting up the group for their shots. The youngest family member here is a baby I had the privaledge of doing a newborn session with, and ended up with one of my favorite images of all times (check our website portfolio and you'll see why) :) This session was a Mother's day gift by the family. Sometimes when you just can't think of a great gift, freezing a moment of life at it's current state with some great photography can be a great way to go! But hey..... I'm bias :)

Katie : Puppy Love

Katie is the sister of my sister's hubby-to-be, and has the sister pup to my sister's little puppy, Macy. Wow, that's a mouthful! LOL! Katie took her beautiful and super fun pets in for a photo shoot before the puppy is too big. The large white dog is Moose, and the little pup is Kira. Moose is soooo funny! He's super well behaved, and is ALWAYS looking for shiny things... he looks at the ground constantly to prance upon anything that catches his eye. Kyle & Heather : Wedding

Kyle & Heather's wedding day went perfectly. The weather was comfortable, yet it rained just enough to make it smell like spring. The bride was gorgeous, and the bridal party was a blast! It was such a blessing to see such a strong love between Heather and Kyle.... example : at most weddings, when the guests 'ting' the glasses at the reception, the bride and groom kinda roll their eyes as they are interrupted from their meal to display a kiss.... this bride and groom would have a huge smile on their faces as they ran through their guests to find each other and share a kiss.
All day, Kyle treated Heather like royalty, and tended to her every need and request without hesitation. They were the sweetest couple in love EVER!!! Enjoy your teasers! We can't wait to show you your entire collection!

Jason & Jenn found us through a client, of a client of a friend whose wedding we did in 2009!

We were watching the weather all day, because there was a really good chance of rain exactly at the time of their session... We were lucky to miss the rain, and were given the very rare, and super cool opportunity to shoot through a chilling, dense fog! It was sunny everywhere except at the beach where the fog rolled in off the lake, and dropped the temp over 20 degrees on the Holland State Park Beach.

We still had loads of fun, freezing our butts off, and putting this couple through all the walking, random stops, and mind changes David and I often do during any of our sessions! Here's a couple of our favorites, with many more to view in a few days ;)

Tulip Time 2011

Last week, our city celebrated it's annual Tulip Time Festival. At one time, I believe Tulip time was the 3rd largest flower festival in the Nation. Hundreds of thousands of Tulips bloom down 16 miles of city streets, while clusters can be found in all the area parks, and attractions. This year was especially beautiful because all the trees bloomed at the same time since our spring has been delayed.

The Klompen Dancers dance each evening, and there is wonderful fatty foods available everywhere down town :) Because of the traffic, most locals are annoyed that most roads are blocked off and pedestrian tourists cross roads anywhere and everywhere. I think many forget to be appreciative... This is a great opportunity to boost West Michigan's economy and attract people to Holland.

I was a dancer as well, so I had to come into town each night. For my boys, we dressed them up (a week later) and went to get photos in the park. All the hustle and bustle is done and we had the park to ourselves ;) Worked well, since they are terribly antsy, and strong willed to run in any direction AWAY from the camera... oh well, here are a few fun shots of my 2 little dutch boys :)

Nate & Kristin are one of those fun, smiley kind of couples, and it was so much fun setting them up for a shot and them bursting into fits of giggles! Ross & Sarah were AWESOME to work with! I swear, they knew the poses, where to stand, where to look and how to interact with each other in front of a photographer! The coolest story about their engagement session is that we ended up right in the same park where Ross gave Sarah her Pearl several years ago, and proposed last year... awwwwwww..... We had a gorgeous day for a photoshoot, and it felt great to get to walk the streets of downtown Holland before the big Tulip Time rush settles into town next week. Ryan & Kristyn : Wedding

Ryan & Kristyn are absolutely beautiful together! They were married April 16, and although we were all expecting a beautiful Sunny Spring day, it rained all day and snowed most of the evening. It sure didn't affect Ryan & Kristyn! We had a great time inside their especially large church building and were super happy with all the awesome lighting and locations we found. Easter Sunday

Wow, it was a great Easter Sunday once again... We started off with the 14th Street Annual Easter Breakfast, followed by the service where they fill the choir loft with anyone willing to sing the Hallelujah Chorus... Then we went to my Grandma & Grandpa's house for lunch and an Easter egg hunt for the younger cousins... It was a nice day, so being outside felt great!

What an amazing day to get to remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Christ has risen indeed!

What People Can't Accept

Today we remember the Crucifixion of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. All through the Bible, the fore telling of Jesus, and his mission on earth is eminent.

Genesis starts with a covenant with Abraham, where God tells Abraham that his line of descendants will make way for God's son, sent from Heaven to teach us the true interpretation of the 'Torah' (or the Old Testament). However, with all the hints and foretelling, God's people don't recognize the Son of God. They all wanted a Savior from their suffering from other countries.... they expected the savior would be a war hero, and become there King through victory... The Jews, still not understanding God's great love and awesome plan, rejected Jesus. God knows that no achievement on earth is better then the gift of life eternally... His mission for Jesus was not to make accomplishments on earth, but to gain numbers for his eternal kingdom.

Want to know a brutal truth? You aren't done living when you pass away...

you don't have to believe it for it to be the honest truth. Life continues for those with God, and sadly, it continues for those against God... When you breath your last, where will you awaken forever? There are ONLY two possibilities for your answer, so don't try to be creative. It's a black and white type answer.

The people hearing Jesus knew the words that he spoke were 100% truth. They were smart and educated, but their hearts were closed and cold as stone. Because of their pride, they rid of Jesus, so those looking up to them as the scholars of God's Law would continue to hold them the wisest and most righteous above all else. Jesus was brutally beaten and murdered in his innocence, by those God named his chosen Nation.

Mel Gibson's "The Passion", shows this historically true event in full detail. Watch with discretion.

Have you ever been accused for something you didn't do? It feels awful. In this case, Jesus was accused falsely and his death sentence carried out. He chose not to fight them, but to be sacrificed.... All for us. Can you accept his sacrifice? Can you acknowledge humbly before the one we owe everything to?

As sad a day this is for those who know Jesus as their personal Savior, we know of the miracle to come during the celebration of the Resurrection Day.

Collin : 12 months

Collin is the 2nd child of my BFF, and celebrated his first birthday on March 29. His mom made a super cool cupcake for him to dig into and have some fun with. Brinks : Family Love

The Brinks family and I have been in contact since about November, going over ideas for a family photo shoot with two kiddos about the same ages as our two little guys... They had this really cool vision of a winter photoshoot with the kids in their bright hats and mittens, and a lovely puffy falling snow... however, after a gazillion colds getting passed around, weather not cooperating, and schedules conflicting, the kids are healthy, the timing was right and they are ready for their session... in April! :) LOL!

It was a beautiful day for their session and we started at the studio for a few and then headed downtown Holland... The kids were real troopers and Mom and Dad were smiles 100% of the time! So, without further rambling, meet the Brinks Family!

Another Year to Celebrate

I woke up this morning, hearing the winds rip around the house... a beautiful golden light was peeking through my window, and birds were chirping in the large tree just outside. The texts are already flooding in with birthday wishes, and I hear Lex is stirring in his crib... It's 7:00am. Time to get up. I check the texts, which consist of all my family members, hoping to be the first to wish me a happy birthday. I smile and go peek into Lex's room to make sure he's really awake. (Why wouldn't he be, it's 7:00am... he actually slept in...) He's standing in his crib, watching the door for any movement. I get him out with a kiss and quietly head downstairs for his morning bottle. On the counter, still cluttered with all the rush of getting home late the night before, I find a beautiful note, left by my husband....

....And I get to enjoy a beautiful cake that Zeke helped make while my mom, Nana, watched them while I worked. He picked out the chocolate cake, purple frosting, and a mountain of sprinkles, on one small area of the cake...I guess he ate most of them, and spread what was left by pouring them out... He's great at spoiling surprizes already. I got home and he says to me in a whisper while covering his mouth so no one else can hear him... 'MOMMY! Zeke has a special surprize for you! A Happy day cake!' gotta love 'em.

I wanted to get a picture of the cake, but when I got it home, realized that Zeke had dropped his basket ball on the top while in his car seat, and most of the top peeled off with the tinfoil :) Zeke was happy to clean off the frosting coated tinfoil, while I eat the chocolate cake :) Fair enough. Here is a corner that was less affected by the ball tragedy.

Keegan : Miracle

Little David Rozema isn't so little anymore! I've had the privilege of photographing him as a newborn and at 6 months old. He is such a happy baby and we had a lot of fun seeing the whole Rozema family again... At the end we were able to get a photo of the 3 boys because as Jen said, 'never pass up the opportunity to photograph all 3 when no one has any stitches, cuts or bruises on their face!'

Thanks to a pose I was inspired to try from Tracy Raver's photography, this came out so cute!

Puppies are the cutest things! Little Macy is 9 weeks old and was soooo much fun! She's a 3 lb. little mix between a Maltese, Pomeranian, chihuahua. This little cutie is the second daughter of Jeremy and Anita Windemuller. We photographed their wedding back in 2008 and it's sooooo cool to see their little family growing! Claira, their oldest came and had a blast playing with Zeke and Lex, while I got my baby fix playing with little Chloe. I'm always so surprized how little those newborns are.... Behind the Scenes - Using Gels to add color to your speedlights.

So, Cara normally does the majority of the posting here on the blog, or um... pretty much all of it... but I got inspired to do a quick post so bear with me. I recently wanted to start experimenting with colored gels for my off camera flash work so I did what I normally did and started googling my head off trying to find some high quality work or tips on how to use colored gels on the flashes for an artistic effect. To my surprise there is very little info out there on how to do this! There are some good articles on using gels for color correction, such as when shooting under flourescent lighting, but not much on using bright reds or blues in an artistic sense. I went ahead and purchased a gel set from B&H Photo Video called the SJ-1 color filter set. It included a good number of Yellow Gels, Blue Gels, Red Gels, Orange Gels and some standard tungsten and flourescent correction gels. Needless to say I was pretty syced up to try them out. So, 7:00 AM Sunday morning, before everyone else wakes up, I start putting together some test shots with a mannequin head that I use, (yeah it's a little embarrasing but more co-operative than the dogs :) ). I get a couple shots popped off and then I hear little footsteps coming down the stairs. he he he, a much better test subject! My 3 year old son Zeke comes walking down the stairs with a smile on his face! Perfect timing! He agrees to pose for a few photos and here is what I got... Here is the setup shot... I am photographing right in our dining room as the sun is coming up to the east.

Yes, quite boring looking but stick with me! Note the brown background and sunlight coming through the window, this is exactly how these photos were shot... and oh look! There's the mannequin head!

Here I put a Westcott TD5 into place to use as the main light, if I had a third Nikon SB-800 flash I would've used that instead. The Westcott TD5 is a continous light source that using 900 watt equivelent flourescent light tubes. They work great but need to be used rather close. You can see here that it is only about 3 feet away.

In order for me to get a proper exposure for all of the different lights I start with the Westcott lights. In this case I was getting 1/200th sec shutter @ f2.8 shooting at ISO 320 which I was pretty happy with. Then I set my blue gelled, (using 2 blue gels), background light to 1/16th power and I set the red gelled light, (using 2 red gels), to 1/64th power. I wanted the red light to add just a kiss of color to the side of Zekes face as seperation. All of my light are set to full manual mode and I am shooting full Manual on my camera, I just prefer that level of control. My Red Gelled kicker light is being synced from a Pocket Wizard Plus II transceiver which is then kicking the signal over to the blue background light which is set in SU-4 slave mode. Here is what those look like when they all fire...

And here is the resulting shot!

You can see that the brown background has gone completely blue and there is a perfect little amount of red kicker light on the side of Zeke's face. I loved the look of that shot!

Over the course of the morning I got a few other shots with slight variations. Here are a couple others...

For this shot I pretty much used the same backround light setup but ramped the power up to 1/4 power. I did away with the Westcott TD5 for this shot and used the other SB-800 as the main light. That one was set to 1/8 power with no gel and was shot through a 33" shoot-through umbrella that was about 2' away from Zeke. Shooting with only flash here I could get better depth of field on my camera. The camera settings were 1/160th shutter, f7.1 @ 320 ISO. All of these Shots were taken with a Nikon D3 using a Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 Lens shot at about 70mm.

Zeke changed into some nicer church clothes and I got a couple more shots with Cara's help. Same light setup as above but just changed to use Red Gels as the background light instead of blue, this is still the same brown backdrop as all the other shots just turned red by the gels!

In this final shot I had a diffent goal. I thought it would be cool to try to make Cara look as though she was working in moonlight and candle light. Not an easy thing to imitate! This shot was taken right in our dining room as well. I am using an orange gel on the light to camera left and a single blue gel on the light to camera right. I desaturated the image slightly in photoshop.

One of the coolest things about this setup is that it only weighs a couple of pounds and can easily be adapted to almost all of our work. I think that we will probably be using this new tool in at least a couple of our upcoming shoots!

Abigail : Miracle

This little sweetie chose not to sleep for her session, but was still just adorable! She was 15 days old at her session and we 'met' her back in December, before she was born :) We sat at her mom and dad's table at Will and Kelli Cobb's December wedding. David and Abigail's dad talked cameras in between getting up to shoot some of the events at the reception. Even though she didn't want to snooze much, we still got a handful of cute images :)

Potts: Sweet Waiting

I never thought photographing 'the bump' was worth it until I, myself, had my babies. Now, I realize how sweet and special and how perfectly cute that baby bump is. Matt and Ashley were absolutely amazing to photograph; and their baby bump is sooooo cute and perfect. They are expecting their first and are super excited for all the surprizes ahead...including baby's gender.

As we were half way through their session, I got a peek of the sunset and the 4 of us rushed outside (in the mud) to get some GORGEOUS sunset photos! They were some serious troopers for us.

Now, I love photoshop and enhance my images quite often to get them to pop, but this sunset photo needed NO work.... It was gorgeous as is, straight out of camera... I wish all our work could get that result!! Thanks guys, for running with our spontaneous ideas :)

Their pup - Moxie, will be a great big sister to the new little one :)
